Garden Sauna FAQ
Planning, power, bases, running costs and installation — the questions we're asked most by customers across Dorset.
How much does a garden sauna cost?
Our garden saunas cost from £11,994 for the Yakia 400 S to £20,394 for the Yakia Ultima L, including VAT and full installation. That covers a site survey, delivery, the base, the electrical connection and assembly, plus the heater, stones and LED lighting. HUUM heater upgrades and accessories are optional extras. Bespoke sauna buildings are priced per project.
Do I need planning permission for a garden sauna?
Usually not. Most garden saunas count as outbuildings under permitted development, provided they're single storey, not in front of the house, cover no more than half the garden, and stay under 2.5m high if within 2m of a boundary. Much of Sandbanks and the Poole Harbour shoreline is in a flood zone, several Poole and Bournemouth neighbourhoods are conservation areas, and the land around Wimborne and Christchurch is South East Dorset Green Belt. A garden sauna is usually still permitted development, but we check flood risk, height and boundary rules for your plot before you order.
What electrical supply does a garden sauna need?
Every model runs on an electric heater that needs its own dedicated circuit from your consumer unit. A 6kW heater draws around 26 amps and a 9kW heater around 39 amps on a standard single-phase supply. The connection must be installed and certified by a qualified electrician — ours does this, and it's included in our installed prices.
What kind of base does a sauna need?
A solid, square and level base with a moisture barrier between the ground and the cabin. That can be a concrete slab, paving on a compacted sub-base, or ground screws, which work well on slopes and avoid heavy groundwork. A level base is also a condition of the Yakia warranty. We lay the base as part of every installation.
How long does installation take?
Lead times are short. Once the base and electrics are ready, the 400 series is assembled on site from a kit, usually within a day. The Ultima L arrives fully assembled and is set in place on the base, so it needs a clear route from the road. We confirm the timetable at the site survey.
Will it fit through my side gate?
The 400 series arrives as flat-packed panels and is built in place, so it will go through a standard side gate or even through the house. The Ultima L is delivered in one piece, so we check access at the site survey before you order.
How long does a sauna take to heat up?
Most electric garden saunas reach a comfortable 70–80°C in around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the model, the heater and the weather outside. A correctly sized HUUM heater with Wi-Fi control lets you start it from your phone so it's ready when you are.
How much does a sauna cost to run?
At current UK electricity prices, a typical session in a 6kW or 9kW cabin costs roughly £1.50 to £3, including heat-up. The heater runs at full power to warm up, then cycles on and off to hold temperature.
Can I upgrade the heater?
Yes. Every Yakia sauna comes with a standard electric heater, and we offer HUUM heaters as an upgrade on every model — including the HUUM DROP and HIVE, with the UKU Wi-Fi controller for app control. Ask us for an upgrade price on the model you're considering.
What are the saunas made from?
Yakia cabins are built from Thermowood — timber that's heat-treated to resist moisture, rot and movement. Walls are 40mm thick, floors 28mm, and the benches and backrests are thermo-aspen, which stays comfortable to sit on when hot.
What warranty do you offer?
Yakia saunas carry a two-year manufacturer's warranty. The external timber must be treated with a quality wood preservative straight after installation to keep the warranty valid — we do this as part of our install. Heaters are covered by their own manufacturer's warranty.
Do you also build bespoke saunas?
Yes. If none of the Yakia models suit your plot, we design and build bespoke sauna buildings to fit your space. Call 07877 600117 or book a free site survey.
